A Day of Bird-watching and WHATABURGER

semi-overcast 0 °F

One of my favorite days of the trip so far. We got up early and met two volunteers for the Padre Island National Seashore to go bird-watching. No other tourists showed up for the activity, so we told the two volunteers (a husband and wife team) that they didn't have to do the activity just for us, but they said "Nonsense". This couple really really enjoys bird-watching. They were great!

So we start our activity at the visitors center looking at a group of sandhill cranes in the field and then hop into the back of their pick-up truck. We first head down the road to see an unusual bird that a ranger has just spotted but couldn't identify. It is a bright red bird, a Vermillion Flycatcher. A cattle crane flies over us as we watch the flycatcher, the first cattle crane of the season. We spend the next 2 1/2 hours with Mary and George -- they are wonderful! We drive to several different spots in the park and identify over 30 different birds. Mary and George explain about their habitat and characteristics. They love birds! They spend Dec-Mar every year doing these tours at Padre Island 6 days/week.

After bird-watching we go back to the RV for lunch and take another walk along the beach. There's a lot of trash from all over the world that ends up on this beach, so Jere and Joe pick up trash along the way to help the clean-up. Yeah, I know....I should have also collected trash, but I wanted a relaxing walk.

After a short break in the RV we decide to take a drive on the beach north of the campground. Since we end up in Corpus Christi at the end of our drive, we decide to have dinner at Whataburger, a fast food hamburger chain that we see everywhere in Texas. There are more of them than McDonalds in this area of Texas. The original fast food Whataburger restaurant was founded in 1950 in Corpus Christi. They sell whataburgers, whatachicken sandwiches, justaburger, whatameal, etc. Anyway, we order and I make the mistake of getting a 'medium' strawberry shake -- it was enormous!!! The largest milkshake I've ever seen. And yes, I did end up drinking the whole thing :-)

Back to the RV and another walk along the beach. Yep, Jere collected more trash and I did the 'relaxing' beach walk. And nope, I didn't feel guilty about it.....strange, I normally would, but not today :-)
